The suicide of a nun in Kerala's Kollam district has created a huge controversy with the family members of the 23-year old nun accusing inmates of her convent of harassing their daughter. The inmates of the hostel say that when Anupa didn't turn up for dinner they went to her room and found her body hanging against ceiling fan.

A suicide note recovered from her room said that she was finding it difficult to adjust to the environment and had differences with the mother superior. She had joined the convent two months ago. But the family has accused some of the inmates of sexually exploiting her."In the night when my child used to be in her room one of the inmates used to forcibly enter her room and sleep with her.

She used to behave indecently with my daughter. Isn't this enough evidence ?," said Pappachan, father of the nun.The state women's commission has called for a detailed probe into the incident. The police have also registered a case in this connection. While the convent authorities have denied the allegations, the nun's father alleged that his daughter was made to do hard work.

"They used to make her do hard work, clean all the rooms, floors. They tortured her otherwise why should a 22-year-old girl end her life," said Pappachan, father of the nun.The Kerala State Women's Commission had recently suggested a set of rules to safeguard women who decide to lead a religious life.

But the proposals were kept in abeyance following protest from the church. Now the latest incident is likely to trigger a fresh round of debate.
