An Indian-American researcher is working with a team of Utah University engineers to design cheaper, lighter and better solar cells. Dinesh Rakhwal, doctoral student in mechanical engineering, said: "We're coming up with a more efficient way of making germanium wafers for solar cells - to reduce the cost and weight of these solar cells and make them defect-free.

"Germanium serves as the bottom layer of the most efficient existing type of solar cell, but is used primarily on NASA, military and commercial satellites because of the high expense - raw germanium costs about $1,360 per kg. The improved 'wafer-slicing' method will help make high-efficiency solar cells for use even on roof tops, where cost now is a factor, said Eberhard Bamberg, assistant professor of mechanical engineering.Brass-coated, steel-wire saws now are used to slice round wafers of germanium from cylindrical single-crystal ingots. But the brittle chemical element cracks easily, requiring broken pieces to be recycled.

The width of the saws means a significant amount of germanium is lost during the cutting process.

The sawing method was developed for silicon wafers, which are roughly 100 times stronger. The new method for slicing solar cell wafers - known as wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) - wastes less germanium and produces more wafers by cutting even thinner slices with less waste and cracking. The method uses an extremely thin molybdenum wire with an electrical current running through it.

It has been used previously for machining metals during tool-making.The findings of Bamberg and Rakwal will appear in the October edition of the Journal of Materials Processing Technology

SAN FRANCISCO: Intel Corp, seeking to increase the speed of server computers for hosting websites and storing files, said customers will begin selling machines with six processors built into one piece of silicon. Dell Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co, International Business Machines Corp and Sun Microsystems Inc will begin selling computers that use the Xeon 7400 chips this week, platform director Shannon Poulin said in an interview.

Intel, world's largest semiconductor maker, is speeding up product development to increase pressure on Advanced Micro Devices Inc in the server market, the most profitable segment of the chip industry. The new Xeon chip was to go on sale in the fourth quarter and debuted earlier than planned, Poulin said. “The performance is heads and tails above our previous products and where the competition is,” Poulin said.

The chip uses less electricity and is as much as 48 per cent faster than previous models, he said. Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, fell 80 cents to $19.36 at 4 pm New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares have dropped 27 per cent this year. Chips for server machines can cost more than $1,000, 10 times the average price of PC processors. The more cores, the greater number of tasks processors can perform simultaneously.

The majority of chips today have two cores and more expensive models employ four. AMD doesn't have six-core chip. AMD, based in Sunnyvale, California, made its biggest gains against Intel in the server market with its Opteron chip, introduced in 2003. AMD's share in some parts of the market rose to as much as 50 per cent in 2007, before Intel fought back by speeding up product introductions.

Porn mode comes to IE8

Posted In: . By Unknown

NEW DELHI: Microsoft is adding a private browsing mode in the next version of its web browser Internet Explorer 8.

Popularly called porn browsing mode (as one of the most obvious advantage of the feature is that users browse porn sites without leaving a trace), it will form a part of its IE 8's beta 2 scheduled for release this month.

Porn mode will allow users to erase their online history, cache and personal information entered or shared by users. Also, it will alert users in case they are being tracked.

The feature seems to be a part of Microsoft’s new emphasis on user privacy, a sour point with many IE users. In fact, in a recent blog post, Microsoft said that privacy is one of the major components of the "trustworthy browsing" element of Internet Explorer 8. Incidentally, IE8 will not be the first browser to offer private browsing, Apple’s Safari browser has this feature since 2005. Also, Mozilla too planned to include this feature in its latest browser Firefox 3, but didn't include it due to some “complex designing” issues.

However, Firefox 3 has an option that allows users to delete history and cookies immediately at the end of a session or during every session start up.

Microsoft has released first beta of IE8 in March. Though company officials have declined to say when the final version of IE8 will come, reports indicate that it will be out by the end 2008

New Delhi, Aug 18: In a decision, which could have a far reaching consequence in future, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday allowed Intenet Telephony in India. In view of TRAI’s decision, the fall in long distance telecom tariffs has now become inevitable. The TRAI ruling permits one to make calls from personal computers to fixed line and mobile phones.

"It is envisaged that customers will ultimately benefit from cost effective and innovative internet telephony service. These recommendations will put Indian telecom sector in tune with global trends.

The grey market tendencies shall be curtailed," TRAI said in a statement. As per the TRAI recommendations, the STD service providers would be connected to ISPs through public internet for the purpose and the two service providers would have mutual agreement for the same. Earlier, voice call made from one computer could travel to another computer but not from a mobile or a fixed line phone.

This has opened huge channels of revenues for the Internet Service Providers (ISPs), who wouldn’t need to acquire a Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) for operating these services. The Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), a technical arm of Department of Telecom, will work out the number plan for the ISPs to enable them to offer telephone services.

"Telephone numbers from identified blocks shall be allocated to ISPs, Unified Access Service Providers, Basic Service Providers and Cellular Mobile Service Providers for internet telephony," TRAI said. With a view to make internet telephony secure, TRAI said, all ISPs interested to provide unrestricted internet telephony would install "Lawful Interception" equipments.

Presently, ISPs are not permitted to provide unrestricted Internet Telephony though they have IP-based infrastructure. The decision is also likely to benefit telecom service providers like Vodafone and Idea, who don’t have national long distance licence/network and use other operators’ networks to carry long distance calls. These operators can carry their NLD calls using their IP network.

While access service providers are permitted to provide various services and applications to their subscribers under Universal Access Service License (UASL), the role of other licensees like NLD and ILD is limited to provide long distance services and ISPs are permitted for internet access."Such regulatory restrictions discourage technological advancements and result in grey market activities to provide these services to common masses," the statement added.TRAI said due importance have been given for level playing to various service providers, interconnection mechanism, inter connect usage charges, numbering, lawful interception, emergency number dialling, interoperability, quality of service and others."Overall licensing framework has been protected while permitting unrestricted internet telephony to ISPs" TRAI said. The new TRAI ruling is also likely to boost competition between established UASL holders such as Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communication, Vodafone and BSNL.

The ISP’s and the telecom operators have been at loggerheads with each other on this issue, with the operators asking for a level playing field. BSNL had pointed it out to the regulator that allowing ISPs will further erode the revenues earned by national long-distance licence holders, while Bharti and RCom had pointed out that in case connectivity between PCs to fixed and mobile phones is allowed, ISPs should be asked to migrate to UASL.

Telecom players have to shell out Rs 1,650 crore for a pan-India UASL, while ISPs pay token Re 1 as the licence fee and the ISPs providing PC to PC telephony have to pay 6% of their adjusted gross revenue. The ISP’s however, say that the Rs 1,650 crore fee includes the start-up spectrum cost as well, which will not be used by the ISPs while providing the connectivity between PCs and fixed and the mobile lines. They have also suggested a formula in case they are allowed terminating the ILD calls.

Two men in the US state of Georgia say they have found the body of a Bigfoot, the legendary ape-like creature that has been subject of decades of hoaxes.

Matt Whitton and Rick Dyer say they stumbled across the 2.3m-high (7ft 7in), 226kg (500 pound) corpse in a wood in the north of the state in June.

A photograph on the men's website shows what appears to be the body of a large, hairy creature with an ape-like face.

Bigfoot experts reacted suspiciously to the men's claims.

What I've seen so far is not compelling in the least, and I think the pictures cast grave doubts on their claim," said Jeffery Meldrum, a Bigfoot researcher and Idaho State University professor.
"It just looks like a costume with some fake guts thrown on top for effect," he told the Scientific American magazine.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service also said its officers were not taking the claim seriously and would not investigate it.

"Bigfoot" finder describes making the discovery

At a news conference in Palo Alto, California, Mr Whitton and Mr Dyer said they had found the body of a male Bigfoot with reddish hair, "blackish-grey" eyes, and human-like feet and hands while out hiking.

"I recognised it was unusual right away," said Mr Whitton, a police officer. "The first thing that pops into your head is that it's Bigfoot."

They also said they saw three other live creatures while carrying the corpse away.

"They were silent," Mr Whitten added.

Another picture is said to show a live Bigfoot in the wood in north Georgia

The two men also brought what they said were the results of DNA tests on the corpse's body tissue which were undertaken by Curt Nelson, a biologist at the University of Minnesota.

According to Mr Nelson, one test showed human DNA, another was inconclusive, while a third came back as the DNA of a possum, which he said could have been from something the Bigfoot had eaten.

Bigfoot is a humanoid creature said to wander the wooded wilds of the Pacific Northwest.
Stories of a giant ape roaming the forests of North America date back to before European settlement. But despite occasional footprints and photographs, there has never been much proof of Bigfoot's existence.

Sex selection related online advertisements by Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have invited unwanted trouble to the software giants. Yahoo India, Google India and Microsoft have been issued notices by the Indian Supreme Court to stop serving advertisements promoting sex selection.

According to Indian PC-PNDT Act (Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostics Techniques) determination of the sex of unborn baby is illegal. The 1994 act was amended in 2003 to stop female feticide.

The PC-PNDT Act states that Prohibition for any advertisement, in any form, including internet, regarding facilities of the prenatal determination of sex or sex selection before conception available at such center, lab, clinic or some other place.

In India more preference is given to the male babies. Many couples using the sex selection technique know in advanced the sex of their unborn child and in most cases if the result is the female sex they go for an abortion. Even with the PC-PNDT Act in place there are still many couples and doctors who follow the sex determination process secretly.

Dr. Sabu Mathew George had filed a written petition regarding the gender selection ads which was clearly violating the PC-PNDT Act. Minister of Communication & IT and Ministry of Health & Family welfare were also dragged into as they were informed about the ads but failed to take any action against the software giants.

Sex determination techniques though banned in India are legally allowed in many countries. Online advertisement use the geo targeted technique determining the country from the users IP address. The ads can also be targeted for specific country. The process is completely automated based on algorithm and there is no guarantee that a perfect country can be determined from the IP address.

Entertainment-themed websites are the most popular with mobile Internet users in the growing Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) mobile markets, says a new research report from The Nielsen company.

Entertainment, gaming, and music websites rank among the top 5 categories visited in all four BRIC countries. Unlike the mature markets like America and Europe, where information and news draws the most mobile Internet browsing. In the US, entertainment, music, and games place eighth, ninth, and tenth respectively.

“In the US and Europe, broad access to media and entertainment has been available for decades through a large fixed distribution infrastructure, and more recently in specialised devices like iPods, to meet consumer’s entertainment needs,” said Jeff Herrmann, vice president of mobile media at Nielsen.

“Users in the growing Brazil, Russia, India, and China markets haven’t had the benefit of broad-based content distribution thereby limiting their exposure, and are filling the service gap by embracing mobile’s transition into a personal entertainment platform,” he adds.

The research also reveals that mobile Internet continues to gain traction worldwide. More than 11 per cent of Russian mobile users have accessed the Internet on their mobile device, trailing only the US, UK and Italy. At 6.8 per cent, China’s mobile Internet penetration is on par with Germany’s, and although Brazil and India trail the rest of the pack, penetration in the two countries is an important first step towards wider adoption.

“Mobile fills an important access gap in nations where Internet access is not always readily available in homes and schools. The data comes from the Mobile Media Marketplace report released by Nielsen. Nielsen now measures mobile behavior in BRIC countries to provide a consistent global view of mobile market development and the growth of mobile media consumption,” said Herrmann.

CALIFORNIA: It’s official! Apple does have the capability to remotely manage applications on your iPhone. In an interview to Walls Street Journal, Apple CEO, Steve Jobs admitted to iPhones having a mechanism that allows the device to contact Apple website and delete the software that the company deems harmful.

Jobs told the newspaper, "Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull." Popularly branded `kill switch', it can disable potentially malicious applications that have been downloaded to any iPhone.

The interview confirms the recent claim of independent researcher Jonathan Zdziarski, who discovered a file in the iPhone's firmware that links to an Apple XML page containing a blank "black list" for malicious applications.

However, it is not clear that the Core Location blacklist found by Zdziarski is the "lever" that Jobs refered to. According to analysts, there could also be a separate mechanism elsewhere in the iPhone's software. It is also yet not clear that what is Apple's exact definition of "malicious" software

NEW DELHI: Social networking site MySpace today said it will provide integrated MySpace Mobile applications on iPhones through Apple's application stores. The application would be available worldwide in 12 languages by the end of July 2008.

The new mobile application has been designed for the portable screen of iPhone, the company said in a statement. A key feature of the application includes the instant photo uploading from the iPhone to a MySpace profile, it added.

Chris DeWolfe, CEO and Co-Founder of MySpace, said, "The global MySpace community will love MySpace Mobile on iPhone. With its rich features it empowers the community with complete control over their global MySpace network right from the palm of their hand."

London :

Music piracy has been adopted in a major way by young people, for a new study has revealed that teenagers have an average of over 800 illegally copied songs on their iPods or MP3 players.

A team at Hertfordshire University has also found that half of 14 to 24-year-olds were willing to share all the music on their computers, enabling others to copy hundreds sometimes thousands of songs at a time.

The scale of illegal music copying disclosed by what has been dubbed as the largest survey of youth music ownership has surprised the industry, which is struggling to cope with free-falling CD sales, 'The Times' reported.

Feargal Sharkey, former lead singer of The Undertones and now Chief Executive of British Music Rights, said: "I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected."

NEW DELHI:

With China developing anti-satellite (ASAT) missiles, lasers and other offensive space capabilities, India has no option but to be fully prepared for "star wars" in the future. The creation of just "an integrated space cell", announced by defence minister A K Antony last week, will just not do towards achieving this objective.

What is needed is a full-fledged tri-service space command for effective tactical, operational and strategic exploitation of the "final frontier". The disquiet among the Indian military brass over China's deadly counter-space military programme, with "direct-ascent" ASAT missiles, hit-to-kill "kinetic" and directed-energy laser weapons, came clearly through on Monday.

"China's space programme is expanding at an exponentially rapid pace in both offensive and defensive content," said army chief general Deepak Kapoor, adding that space was increasingly becoming the "ultimate military high ground" to dominate in the wars of the future.

Holding that it should be India's endeavour to "optimize space applications for military purposes" at a seminar on "Indian military and space", Gen Kapoor said the establishment of a tri-service space command "is required in the future". Integrated defence staff chief Lt-General H S Lidder, in turn, added, "With time, we will get sucked into the military race to protect space assets and inevitably there will be a military contest in space.

In a life-and-death scenario, space will provide the advantage." India, of course, has been painfully slow to react to the huge Chinese strides in the military use of space, which was rudely brought home by its January 2007 test of an ASAT weapon, despite having a robust civilian space programme for several years.

India does not even have dedicated military satellites till now, with the armed forces depending on the "dual use" Cartosat-I, Cartosat-II and the recently-launched Cartosat-IIA for their Rs 1,000-crore satellite-based surveillance and reconnaissance (SBS) programme. With ISRO finally promising to launch dedicated military satellites in the near future, defence scientists are also experimenting with some "high-power laser weapons", say sources. But the operational use of such star wars-like weapons is still several years away.

India's sheer lack of strategic defence planning is exemplified by the fact that though the armed forces, especially the IAF, have been clamouring for an aerospace command for several years now, it remains a mere pipedream. Finally, just last week, Antony declared that an integrated defence space cell would be created to protect "the growing threat to our space assets".

The Defence Space Vision-2020, on its part, identifies just intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance, communication and navigation as the thrust areas in the first phase till 2012.

India certainly needs effective utilization of space for "real-time" military communications and reconnaissance missions to keep closer tabs on troop movements, missile silos, military installations and airbases of neighbouring countries.

But this should be followed soon after by other uses of space like missile early-warning, delivery of precision-guided munitions through satellite signals, jamming enemy networks and, of course, ASAT capabilities.

When the News Corporation added MySpace to its portfolio nearly three years ago, it expected that if its base of 16 million users kept growing — and each user kept adding friends, sharing photos and swapping flirty messages — the advertising dollars would roll in.

The social networking site has grown — to 118 million worldwide users — and the flirtations have not stopped. But the cash is not coming in as quickly as the company had hoped.

In the fiscal year that ends in two weeks, the News Corporation unit that encompasses MySpace will miss its $1 billion revenue target.

When the News Corporation announced the projected shortfall in April, several analysts downgraded the company, sending shares down 5 percent.

With an eye toward monetization, MySpace is being redesigned beginning Wednesday with a new home page, which will be less cluttered and more hospitable to advertising.

(The home page will also feature a “splash page” for an ad about the new Batman movie, “The Dark Knight.”) The redesign, to be done by early fall, will include a new navigation bar, search tool and video player.

The redesign is intended to address a problem of social networking sites, which is that many user pages have the aesthetic appeal of a 14-year-old’s high-school locker. But there are still many questions left about the advertising value of social networks.

In the last few months, the bloom has come off social networking’s rose. MySpace and its chief competitors, Facebook and Bebo, all have ambitious plans for making money but not enough proof that the plans are working.

“The jury’s still out on MySpace’s ability to monetize,” said Michael Nathanson, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Company.

The sites seem desirable to advertisers based on the traffic they receive. MySpace has an American audience of 73 million, and Facebook counts 36 million, according to comScore.

(Worldwide, Facebook tied MySpace for the first time in April, averaging about 115 million users for each site.) Users spend hours on the sites.

But because MySpace commands a majority of all the money spent on social networking, it is viewed as a bellwether for the growing industry.

On a conference call last month, Peter Chernin, president and chief operating officer for the News Corporation, toned down the grandiose expectations for social networking advertising and acknowledged that selling spots on personal profile and group pages is not easy.

Social networking represents an “entirely new form of Internet activity,” Mr. Chernin said.
When MySpace’s parent, Fox Interactive Media, announced a three-year, $900 million advertising pact with Google in 2006, analysts started placing big bets that social networking would be a major new revenue stream.

While the Web is becoming more social, it is hard to wring profits from it.

Indeed, the balloon of unrealistic prospects is losing air. The attitude change was first detected at the end of January when, one year into its $900 million pact with MySpace, Google said that social networking inventory was not earning money as well as expected. (More recently, Google said the situation was improving.)

The attitude change was confirmed in April when Fox Interactive Media said that it would miss its revenue target. By then, the chief revenue officer for the unit had been dismissed.
Mr. Nathanson, the analyst, said that MySpace’s perceived shortfall had been frustrating. “We don’t have much conviction in the long-term ability to grow this business based on what we’ve seen lately,” he said.

Other analysts hold a more bullish view. Anthony DiClemente of Lehman Brothers recommended the News Corporation’s stock on Friday partly because of MySpace’s 25 to 30 percent year-over-year revenue growth.

MySpace, naturally, agrees with the more optimistic view.

“We’re seeing the dollars come in,” said Jeff Berman, who was promoted to president of sales and marketing for MySpace in April, when Fox Interactive Media’s sales force was rearranged. Revenue per user is said to be up 50 percent over last year, but the site is still making only about $6 to $7 per user per year.

EMarketer estimates that MySpace will post $755 million in revenue in the fiscal year ending June 30. MySpace would not comment on the estimate. About a third of the revenue is expected to come from the Google ad pact. For the year, Facebook is estimated to earn $265 million in ad revenue.

The companies are acting swiftly to solve the social networking riddle. MySpace is constantly issuing press releases on new features or partnerships. The site is keen on hypertargeting, which places users in “buckets,” based on their interests, and delivers ads accordingly. Nearly a third of the buys on MySpace are hypertargeted now, Mr. Berman said.

Facebook has a similar targeting system, called social ads. Advertisers choose an audience — say, Florida college students who watch “SportsCenter” on ESPN; there are 10,680 Florida college students on Facebook — then create a simple ad and set a budget. MySpace’s version, called SelfServe, is being beta-tested.

Bebo, the third-largest social network site in the United States, was bought by AOL, a unit of Time Warner, last month. The company said that it intended to use AOL’s advertising entity to monetize the site.

But for many media buyers, these advertising models remain experimental. At the same time, ad budgets are softening. Last December, eMarketer forecasted $1.6 billion in social network spending in 2008. In April, it revised that figure to $1.4 billion.

“The challenge is that all these new forms of advertising are more difficult to plan, measure and quantify than advertisers are used to, and that has impacted spending growth,” Debra Aho Williamson, an eMarketer analyst, wrote in April.

Mr. Berman of MySpace said that “with new advertisers, there is certainly an education process,” and that the sales staff was trying to oblige the advertisers. For example, executives from Procter & Gamble visited MySpace’s headquarters in April for meetings about social network advertising strategies.

Yet there are concerns that social network users do not view ads, no matter how carefully the ads are placed. “Users’ attentions are the most scarce element on most social networks,” Chamath Palihapitiya, the vice president for product marketing at Facebook, said. “A successful ad product has to capture that scarce attention and engage it in a way that’s social and relevant.”
So what can speed up ad fortunes for social networks? Social ads are Facebook’s first step. They can take social actions, such as a user’s identifying himself as a Nike fan, and pair it with an ad tailored to that user’s friends. “Your friend is a fan of Nike,” the ad would say.

“Making ad campaigns even more effective on the site is part of what we’re doing” with the changes, Mr. Berman said. He noted that home-page ad displays, like last Thursday’s for “The Incredible Hulk” and this Wednesday’s for “The Dark Knight,” can reach 40 million users on a given day, “bigger than the biggest broadcast television shows.” Chris DeWolfe, the president of MySpace, thinks the skeptics should take a deep breath. “We are far ahead of where Google or Yahoo were at this stage of growth,” Mr. DeWolfe said.

Mr. Palihapitiya of Facebook takes a similar view. “This is a journey that is going to unfold over the next five to 10 years. That’s when the winners will emerge,” he said.
