Aditya Birla Group offers much 'More'
Aditya Birla Retail today launched its hypermarkets format of stores now this comes one year after the company launched its super market called ‘More’.
The Aditya Birla Group today officially launched the first hypermarket in the country, it is called the ‘More Mega Store’. It is about 70,000 sq feet and we are told on average a mega store from this group will be about 80,000 sq ft. It will contain about 60,000 SKUs of different categories and different brands of merchandise.
Kumar Mangalam Birla, the Chairman of the Group says that the role out plan A is on track. There will be about twelve of these stores coming up across different parts of the country over the next one year and he says that the super market version of the company is also on track.
Kumar Mangalam Birla said, “Things have gone very much according to plan, we have now 430 supermarts across the country and this is our second mega more store, which is a hyper mart and we will end the year with 500 super marts so it has gone very much as per our expectation.”
CNBC-TV8 learns that that the expansion will be as robust as the previous year that means expect 500 more ‘More’ stores across the country in the next one year and we are also told that they are working on some specialty retail formats like in electronics retailing format store. That should be out very soon.
Aditya Birla Retail's launch of its hypermarket format of stores comes one year after the company launched its super market called ‘More’. Even as the company goes full speed ahead with expansion, it is grappling with some potential speed breakers.
‘More mega store’ is what Aditya Birla Retail's hyper market chain is called . With an average size of 80,000 sq feet, the stores will stock about 60,000 stock keeping unit (SKUs) or types of merchandise. The Vadodara store is the second mega store; the first being in Mysore. The company says in the one year, since operation began, expansion has been on track.
But most of the stores have come up in tier II cities because of high real estate cost, which is Indian retail’s biggest problem.
That means do not expect to see a ‘More’ mega store in Mumbai, New Delhi or any of the large cities anytime soon. Sources say Gurgaon will get one this year.
Another problem that Indian retailers faced in the last year is protest from traders and middleman to the growth of organised retail. Aditya Birla Retail says it will include that community in its business plan very soon.
Even as Aditya Birla Retail deals with issues, it says growth will not slow down. It expects ten more mega stores across the country in the next one year along with new format stores that are on the cards.
