MUMBAI: The All India Ulema Council general secretary Maulana Mehmood Daryabadi said here on Thursday that the organisation was extending its call to Muslims to boycott Godrej products to more parts of the country.

What angered the Council was the Godrejs hosting controversial writer Salman Rushdie in Mumbai. In a letter two days ago, it had demanded an apology from Adi Godrej, chairman of the company.

The letter said that the Muslims would be called upon to boycott Godrej products if the chairman did not apologise. Maulana Mehmood Daryabadi of the Ulema Council told The Hindu that he had received no response from Mr. Godrej. A corporate communicator for Godrej, quoting the company chairman’s office, said that Mr. Rushdie had stayed at the house of Ms. Parmeshwar Godrej.

He had, however, left Mumbai after police commissioner D.N. Jadhav warned of a law and order problem if he continued to be there. He maintained that the matter was sorted out at a meeting with the Muslim leaders.
